Enhancing retail security with AI

May 2, 2024
All Security News - Leo Merle, Corporate Marketing Manager, Blaize looks at the intersection of AI and retail security, exploring its potential as well as challenges and implications. In an era where retail transactions increasingly occur online, ensuring robust security is paramount for businesses. As technology evolves, so do the methods employed by both retailers and malicious actors. Amidst this landscape, AI is a powerful tool, offering solutions to bolster retail security. However, understanding the nuances of AI capabilities in the context of retail security requires a balanced, vendor-neutral perspective. Retail security has always been a critical concern for businesses. Traditionally, security measures predominantly focused on physical aspects such as surveillance cameras and guards. However, the advent of e-commerce introduced a new dimension to security challenges. Protecting sensitive information became imperative with vast amounts of data exchanged in online transactions. Consequently, retail security strategies evolved to encompass cybersecurity measures such as encryption, firewalls and secure payment gateways. Yet, as cyber-threats grew in sophistication, more than traditional security measures were needed. This prompted the integration of AI into retail security frameworks, heralding a new era of adaptive and proactive defense mechanisms. Understanding AI in retail security AI encompasses diverse technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision. When applied to retail security, AI enables systems to analyse vast volumes of data in real time, identify patterns and detect anomalies indicative of potential breaches. One of the primary applications of AI in retail security is fraud detection. Machine learning algorithms can sift through transaction data, discerning legitimate purchases from fraudulent ones with high accuracy. These systems adapt to evolving fraud tactics by continuously learning from new data, enhancing their efficacy over time. AI-powered video analytics revolutionises surveillance in retail environments. Advanced computer vision algorithms can monitor store premises, automatically detecting suspicious activities or individuals..... All Security News from International Security Journal.

New VAL150 Platform Ticket Validator from HID

May 2, 2024
All Security News - HID has confirmed the release of its new VAL150 Platform Ticket Validator. VAL150 Platform Ticket Validator The VAL150 – an open architecture validator – features a multimedia ticket reader capable of processing barcodes, QR codes, closed loop transit cards and open loop contactless EMV payments. According to HID, the VAL150 is integrated with a Linux computer and is housed in a weatherproof casing and is therefore ideal for outdoor public transportation environments. The HID ticket validator is used by the Milwaukee County Transit System on its CONNECT 1 BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) stations as part of the WisGo fare collection system. This is powered by Umo Mobility, part of Cubic Transportation Systems. Read and validate The VAL150 incorporates HID TripTick technology to read and validate a wide range of ticket types. Not only does this include barcodes and QR codes, but it is also capable of validating closed loop transit cards and open loop contactless EMV payments via a single interface. By modernising fare collection, agencies and operators provide passengers with a frictionless way to pay and board. Not only does this contribute to increased ridership, but it increases efficiency and security.. All Security News from International Security Journal.

Law enforcement effectiveness with iris recognition

May 2, 2024
All Security News - ISJ hears from Tim Meyerhoff, Director, Product Management & Market Development, Iris ID. This integration of advanced technology into law enforcement practices has evolved over the years, marking a shift towards accurate and efficient identification methods. The early 1900’s saw the introduction of fingerprint biometric identification classifications and the Bertillon system, which was a first-of-its-kind technique. This system tracked and identified criminal suspects based on photographs and physical measurements with the hope that it would help police identify new and repeat criminals to apply appropriate jail sentences. While groundbreaking, this faced challenges due to its reliance on height measurements that could be shared among individuals. Inaccuracies aside, these early systems started a transformation that encouraged the use of science and technology to aid in more precise investigation and identification methods. These systems led to more complex inventions such as Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and, eventually, the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system including the fully operational Iris Service. Implemented in September of 2020, the FBI’s NGI Iris Service marked a significant milestone in law enforcement technology. This cutting edge system was designed to enrol, catalogue and rapidly compare iris images with an accuracy rate of up to 99%. What began in 2013 with US Border Patrol as a pilot program has grown into a powerful repository of over three million sets of iris images to date, providing law enforcement agencies with a potent means to enhance effectiveness. According to the FBI Iris Service Team, seven states are in compliance actively using a state or regional identification ABIS supporting type 17 records. In 2024, 17 more states are expected to receive compliance and by 2025 an additional 25 will be compliant. Why irises? From a technology perspective, iris recognition....
