Michelle Kradolfer, Secured by Design National Manager, Police CPI explains how the organisation is increasing public safety through innovation and collaboration.

Could you tell us more about the initiatives currently being delivered by Police CPI?

Originating 36 years ago from the Secured by Design initiative, Police CPI has expanded to include seven core initiatives and numerous workstreams.

Crime prevention is Police CPI’s sole focus and all initiatives and workstreams serve to make the communities where we live, work and play safer and more secure.

We work with partners across policing, government and industry, giving us the unique opportunity to understand crime prevention problems from different angles and create solutions.

How is Police CPI adapting in response to emerging technologies and an evolving threat landscape?

Do you manufacture or supply Internet of Things (IoT) products and services? Well the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act is no longer on the horizon; it has been mandatory for over a year. However, it’s clear many businesses are still navigating its implications.

Whilst many businesses might not see their products as traditional “IoT devices,” the PSTI Act defines a “connectable product” very broadly and it’s critical that businesses are sighted on this.

However, it’s not just manufacturers. Every business in the supply chain plays a critical role in keeping insecure products off the UK market. From distributors to retailers, everyone has a responsibility.

We developed the SBD Secure Connected Device accreditation in consultation with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, to helps businesses achieve compliance with the PSTI Act.

Compliance isn’t just about avoiding penalties, although with fines reaching £10m or 4% of global turnover, that is a powerful motivator.

It’s about building trust and future-proofing your brand. Consumers are more security-conscious than ever and demonstrating your commitment to protecting them can become a significant competitive advantage.

Our Secure Connected Device accreditation provides a credible path to demonstrate compliance with legislation like the PSTI Act, turning a regulatory challenge into a powerful marketing tool.

Don’t just build products; build trust and a legacy of security. Partner with the UK’s official police initiative to unlock your company’s full potential and become the brand that customers and specifiers actively seek out.

In the context of building safer communities, how important is your partnership network to achieving goals?

It is critical. Police CPI has a 36-year track record of delivering tangible, academically proven crime prevention initiatives which enhance community safety all at no cost to the public purse.

That is down to the work that we do with numerous partners from a multitude of different sectors (policing, industry, government, standards bodies and the public) which allows us to visualise threats and opportunities and create innovative potential solutions.
