One of the most critical factors to consider when looking to implement an effective security screening strategy in aviation environments is efficiency.

By ensuring a continuous flow of people, airports, for instance, can mitigate congestion in critical areas, contributing to greater operational oversight whilst lowering waiting times and keeping passengers happy.

Advanced, accurate screening solutions are being developed by leading manufacturers such as Smiths Detection with this consideration in mind – and Italy’s largest airport, Rome’s Fiumicino International Airport, Leonardo da Vinci, is experiencing the benefits.

A commitment to security and experience

Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX carry-on baggage screening technology is ensuring that the Fiumicino International Airport keeps service standards high, having been awarded 5-Star by Skytrax and recognised as ACI Europe Best Airport four times in the last five years.

According to the company, by utilising Computed Tomography (CT) technology, passengers do not have to remove electronics and liquids from their bags when being screened.

Not only does this improve the passenger experience, it actually enhances security effectiveness.

In an announcement published by the company, Smiths explained that its CT checkpoint technology ‘produces high resolution volumetric 3D images for quicker and deeper baggage assessment, automatic explosives detection and low false alarm rates’.

“We have futureproofed our security checkpoints”

“We’re delighted by the early results that we’re seeing at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci airport,” said Gabriel Pequignot, Head of Market, Smiths Detection.

“The installation of Smiths Detection’s world-leading passenger CT technology is a reflection of the airport’s commitment to security, passenger experience and improving operational process – and a demonstration of why they have been awarded ACI Europe Best Airport and 5-Star by Skytrax.”

Marco Stramaccioni, Chief Executive Officer, ADR Security for Leonardo da Vinci Rome International Airport added: “Aeroporti di Roma looks forward to being a frontrunner for passenger experience and security at Leonardo di Vinci Rome International Airport.

“As passenger numbers increase, we will be well placed to efficiently screen passengers, reducing the burden on our operators. By harnessing the power of CT technology, we have futureproofed our security checkpoints.”
