Secure, real-time data transmission across air, land and sea

As modern security operations become increasingly data-driven, the ability to share intelligence securely and instantly between air, sea and land is now a defining factor in mission success.

From humanitarian response to border security and counterterrorism, every second of delay or data loss can compromise outcomes. Yet, ensuring continuous, high-quality connectivity across domains remains one of the most persistent technical challenges for defence and security organisations.

The communication challenge

Remote sensors play a crucial role in transmitting real-time, high-quality video and audio data, speeding up the flow of intelligence. However, doing this from the air via fixed or rotary-wing aircraft, for example, presents many challenges.

Security teams, particularly those in policing, emergency services, border control and critical national infrastructure, often find their equipment to be prohibitively expensive or unsuitable for different environments.

Organisations in security, emergency and defence need robust and reliable data link equipment that adapts to varied operational scenarios. As a result, many are adding a variety of transmission systems into airborne platforms to bolster their concept of operations and deliver the output they need.

As teams deploy across varied regions – from mountainous borders to vast maritime zones – aircraft often carry several different transmission systems to maintain contact. For example, border protection units in Eastern Europe and patrol teams in the South China Sea have been acquiring or leasing various specialised equipment to fulfil mission requirements.

However, managing these simultaneously can overload crews and increase mission risk, complicating operations and frustrating users. Without intelligent management, operators face blind spots, bottlenecks and the threat of dropped links, all of which can compromise operational success.

Each communication bearer operates with different bandwidths, latencies and line-of-sight requirements. Switching manually between them demands constant monitoring of signal quality, terrain and interference; tasks that divert valuable attention during time-critical operations.

The result is a communications environment that is fragmented and unpredictable, with operators often juggling competing priorities between performance, cost and coverage.

One size does not fit all

It’s clear that today’s airborne and ground operators face increasingly complex communications environments, and no single technology can meet every mission’s requirements. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, depending on the terrain, range or threat environment.

Traditional systems, such as COFDM, are designed for reliability and robustness in transmitting video and audio from aircraft to ground stations. Data Links continue to reign as the primary bearers for most operations, despite coming with an initial higher cost of infrastructure.

As security teams become more money-conscious, some are turning to alternative tech solutions for different missions. Satellite communications, for instance, allow aircraft to transmit data via satellite rather than ground towers, enabling broader reach, but this comes at the cost of reliability, as signals are prone to interference from aircraft rotors and banking manoeuvres.

Cellular and LTE technologies offer a more budget-friendly approach, although they were primarily designed for terrestrial communication and offer lose efficacy at higher altitudes. Mesh networks can help but are rarely up to the task of high-quality video transmission when facing critical missions.

Bridging the communication gap

Against this challenging backdrop, SPX Communication Technologies has launched ECS Connect, designed to address these limitations.

Based on mission priorities set by the operator, the system automatically selects the most suitable communication path or aggregates multiple networks for redundancy. This ensures the most efficient use of available bandwidth, minimising packet loss and keeping data streams stable even when individual links fluctuate or fail.

For example, during a maritime patrol, ECS Connect might prioritise SATCOM for long-range coverage, automatically shifting to COFDM datalink or cellular/LTE as the aircraft approaches coastal areas to exploit higher throughput.
