Mitie has celebrated a significant milestone with the addition of its 4,000th electric vehicle (EV) to its vehicle range.
This development highlights Mitie’s ongoing commitment to transitioning towards a zero-emission range.
Mitie’s 4,000th EV
The unveiling ceremony for the vehicle occurred at National Grid House, with Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, presiding over the event.
In his capacity as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on EVs, Western gained insights into Mitie’s endeavours to promote sustainable transport and decarbonisation across Britain.
These efforts encompass deploying electric vehicles to both its workforce and clients, alongside the widespread installation of EV charge points nationwide.
The addition of the 4,000th EV signifies the commencement of Mitie’s acquisition of 650 new Volkswagen ID Buzz vehicles.
The long range electric vehicles will serve various roles within Mitie’s workforce, including tasks such as cleaning, landscaping and mobile engineering across multiple sites.
The vehicle procurement is part of a recent partnership agreement between the company and National Grid, which involved providing facilities management services at more than 260 National Grid sites.
Fully electrifying the fleet
With 60% of the company’s range now consisting of electric vehicles, Mitie remains on track to achieve its objective of fully electrifying its fleet by the end of 2025.
The company’s objective was launched in 2020 under the banner of Plan Zero, a comprehensive program aimed at achieving net-zero operations within the same timeframe.
The key to the company’s progress has been the implementation of a robust EV roadmap, focused on systematically replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric alternatives across its various contracts and properties.
In addition to deploying electric vehicles, the company is also contributing to the development of clean, renewable energy infrastructure needed to support the EV revolution.
This includes the installation of over 2,800 charge points at employee residences and customer sites.
Furthermore, Mitie is actively assisting its clients, such as National Grid, in formulating and implementing their own EV strategies, encompassing fleet electrification and the establishment of charging infrastructure.
“Reducing transport emissions”
Heidi Thompson, Group Fleet Manager, Mitie stated: “Reaching our 4,000th EV is a major milestone on our journey to reaching a zero-emission fleet by the end of 2025.
“The vehicle joining our fleet at National Grid will serve a crucial role for our cleaning operatives on the contract.
“It was a pleasure to be joined by the local MP, Matt Western, who in his role as the Chair of the APPG on EVs is driving forward the importance of fleet electrification, championing UK businesses to embrace EV strategies.”
Western concluded: “It was great to have the opportunity to welcome Mitie’s 4,000th electric vehicle to its fleet and hear from the team about the important work they are doing.
“It is seriously impressive how Mitie are leading the way with one of the largest electric fleets in the UK.
“Businesses have a significant role in reducing transport emissions and I encourage all businesses to look at decarbonising their fleets.”
