Numerous reports are suggesting that a major ransomware hacking campaign is set to target computer servers across Europe and North America specifically.

According to news agency ANSA (via POLITICO), Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) issued a warning on 12 March which provided information regarding vulnerabilities and expected targets,

This specific ransomware campaign is expected to take advantage of the vulnerabilities in VMware ESXi technology that, despite having been previously discovered, may still leave organisations at risk.

The ACN statement said: “These types of servers had been targeted by hackers in the past due to their vulnerability. However, this vulnerability of the server was not completely fixed, leaving an open door to hackers for new attacks.”

ANSA claimed that France was the first country to detect the attack.
