The key to unlocking operational success

The-key-to-unlocking-operational-success

Access control has evolved far beyond its role as a security measure – it now serves as the central nervous system of modern building operations, reports ICT.

Today, access control drives efficiency, enhances user experiences and enables smarter, data-driven decision-making, a trend set to gain even more momentum in 2026.

By leveraging integrated systems that combine access control, HVAC, lighting and more, organisations can turn raw data into actionable insights.

This empowers users to optimise operations, reduce energy usage and strengthen security.

Beyond that, it supports predictive maintenance, smarter resource allocation and a more personalised user experience, making buildings functional, intelligent and responsive.

Gone are the days of a “one-size-fits-all” approach

An open API system lays out the groundwork for endless possibilities.

By Integrating your access control system with other systems and platforms, you allow it to go beyond its standalone capabilities.

This approach allows for seamless communication between systems, enhances efficiency, improves security and creates a more cohesive operational environment.

Whether it’s synced with HR software, visitor management systems or IoT devices, integration empowers your access control system to deliver smarter, more innovative solutions tailored to your needs.

One constant that will never change is that users demand choice and control, a security system that addresses their current needs while offering the flexibility to evolve and adapt alongside them, solving challenges as they arise.

“Integrating with additional services drives wider operational benefits for organisations in terms of time and cost savings and helps provide more data for further business insights” explains Sarah Thompson, Chief Product Officer, Integrated Control Technology (ICT).

This sentiment was echoed in a recent Voices from the Field webinar, hosted by Integrated Control Technology (ICT), where experienced security installation companies emphasised the importance of moving away from a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Leaning on the same product for every project not only restricts flexibility but can also compromise security. Carefully evaluating the most suitable solution for each site is essential to unlocking its full potential.

The true value of implementing a new access control system lies in its ability to support the broader operational needs of a site or building.

Often, the primary benefit isn’t just enhanced security, but the improvements in streamlining business operations, making them faster and more cost-effective.

Real-world success

Across the globe, ICT enables customers to leverage access control systems to streamline operations and create new business models.

From effortlessness hotel check-ins in Iceland and real-time monitoring of a de-icing system in North America, to ensuring law enforcement in remote areas and better service to citizens in a large Australian city,  these solutions are versatile and adaptable in solving complex operational challenges across diverse industries and regions.

Using ICT’s unified access control and intrusion detection platform, Protege GX, these applications have made the customers’ operations far easier and more cost effective.

Automated guest experience at Hótel Hálön

Securitas Iceland gave Hótel Hálönd a distinct advantage by enabling them to create a new type of accommodation offering with competitive guest pricing.

By integrating the Protege GX system with their booking system, the hotel in Iceland can automate guest check-ins and send access codes to guests within 15 minutes, significantly reducing manual effort.

The same code is used to access the guests’ hotel room and ski / sport equipment locker and common areas. This innovative approach eliminates the need for manual check-ins, allowing the hotel to operate with fewer on-site staff, reducing costs and enhancing operational flexibility.

“The flexible, modern technology makes it easy to bring self-service to life for the hotel,” says Hafþór Harðarson, Product Manager at Securitas.

Innovative solution ensuring safer roads

In North America, a de-icing solution designed to keep roads and bridges ice-free has generated huge savings in both time and labour costs since implementing ICT’s unified access control platform over a decade ago.

The transportation agency made the switch after its original system left technicians in the dark, unable to receive alerts or access equipment remotely.

With Protege GX, as the foundation for access control, they gained the ability to monitor critical metrics in real-time, including temperature, pressure and tank fluid levels.

Automated alerts now provide technicians with reliable, real-time insights, ensuring the system operates seamlessly and efficiently to keep roads safe, no matter the conditions.

Precision detection for remote location

Kompliance Smart Mobile units are engineered for remote monitoring across traffic management, road safety and speed policing. Powered by ICT’s Protege GX system, these off-road units effortlessly handle multiple operations with precision.

Kompliance has successfully achieved almost 100% reduction in false alarms for PIR sensors as well as eliminating the need for personnel to be physically present at every location.

“It’s so easy to monitor from a central spot and authorise access for contractors remotely”, says Tony Ogden, Director at Kompliance.

“That creates a significant operational advantage for our customers with more flexibility and lower operational risks.”

Enhanced operational efficiency for local government

The City of Parramatta has transformed its operations with the implementation of ICT’s unified platform, achieving remarkable efficiency and scalability.

By centralising access control, alarm management and facility bookings into a single system, the council has streamlined processes across 110 sites, reduced manual interventions and enabled rapid incident response.

Seamless integrations with subsystems like lighting, HVAC and booking platforms have enhanced energy efficiency and public accessibility, while the 24/7 security operations centre ensures citywide safety.

“Our core operation, everything we have integrates with Protege GX, that is our foundation.” says Mo Al Salemi, Security Platform Specialist at City of Parramatta

Maintaining your competitive edge

A single source of truth is no longer optional; it’s the non-negotiable foundation of staying competitive. Centralising data into one reliable system eliminates inefficiencies and risks associated with fragmented information.

Fragmented systems with multiple databases to maintain increases the risk of errors, slow decision-making and puts both operations and reputation at risk.

In a world where agility and precision define success, it becomes necessary to rely on a resilient yet flexible unified system.

This can be achieved without dismantling existing systems, simply by using an efficient method to synchronise databases, through software licensing, such as ICT Protege GX’s Data Sync for instance.

The bi-directional integration with external data sources automates processes that would otherwise demand manual effort.

For instance, Data Sync seamlessly connects with the Hótel Hálönd’s booking system, syncing customer bookings with the right access levels.

The result? Streamlined operations, reduced errors and a level of efficiency that sets businesses up for long-term success.

The future of operational success

Access control systems are a critical matter; they need to be reliable, however, they don’t need to be complex or restrictive.

Their implementation shouldn’t throw a spanner into the way operations are running, but quite the opposite, they should work seamlessly with other systems, delivering the operational efficiency business needs.

Companies and organisations looking at implementing a new access control system should look at it as a problem solver, an enabler to improve operations and, in some instances, to create new business opportunities.
