Nigel Bullock, Head of Solutions, Hill & Smith Infrastructure explains how intelligent perimeter protection is evolving to meet modern security challenges.

What type of security solutions do you provide?

Hill & Smith Infrastructure offers a range of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) and perimeter security solutions, designed to mitigate against vehicle-borne attack.

Our portfolio offers a broad range of performance and is tested and rated to various international standards ensuring the correct system is deployed to provide the appropriate protection to be met based on the threat assessment.

HVM is vital for protecting people in high-profile and smaller gatherings, securing critical infrastructure and the public realm.

We offer solutions for vulnerable environments such as crowded public places, data centres, energy production sites, stadiums, airports, military bases, sporting events and festivals, to mention a few examples.

As part of our Bristorm permanent range, we offer a variety of fences, bollards, walling systems, gates that can be integrated into the design of new infrastructure or installed to upgrade existing assets.

Our temporary solutions consist of Bristorm ReDeploy, a versatile range of re-deployable barges, pedestrian portals, gates and surface mounted bollards.

It is complemented by our mobile temporary range of HVM solutions, which offer versatility while providing a layer of protection.

What sets your solutions apart from other providers within the sector?

What differentiates us on the market is our ability to provide end-to-end solutions starting from project inception through to implementation using both temporary and permanent systems.

We have a wide range of products, allowing us to meet a broad range of scenarios; our services include design and consultation, installation and maintenance.

We provide solutions for existing and new infrastructure. For existing infrastructure, we can provide temporary measures while permanent solutions are being upgraded or installed.

Due to their design, some of our temporary solutions (Bristorm ReDeploy) can also be used as a permanent solution.

The support offered by Hill & Smith Infrastructure includes assistance with product selection and input into designs.

This support ensures that our clients have access to the full product portfolio and can choose the most appropriate solutions for their needs.

We have a wealth of knowledge within the team and they follow robust processes that include conducting thorough assessments, CAD drawings and subsequent site visits to ensure the correct implementation of HVM solutions.

How are you keeping up to date with evolving trends and technologies?

The increase in people using vehicles as a weapon or vehicles to gain access into areas calls for the constant evolvement of protection measures.

At Hill & Smith Infrastructure we continue to adapt and develop our product portfolio to meet the ever-changing environment. This includes assessing new threats and developing solutions to address them.

Some of our products that were originally designed for highway applications can be upgraded to provide HVM with the same base product unit.

Those products can also be used in conjunction with fences, minimising the system footprint; these systems are unique as they can be safely used on perimeters that are adjacent to live highways.

What are your ambitions for the next 12 months as you continue to grow globally?

We believe that product awareness, taking a holistic view about HVM, and understanding all the aspects to be able to select the right product for each situation is paramount.

We are committed to knowledge sharing and support in the HVM industry and will continue educating designers and providing them with the necessary information to make informed decisions about HVM solutions.
