FLIR has introduced it’s TrafiBot Dual AI camera system for interurban traffic intelligence.
The traffic camera has been designed to improve safety in tunnels and on bridges where drivers are the most at risk for hitting unseen objects or becoming trapped by fast-growing vehicle fires.
Key features – suitability and durability
TrafiBot Dual AI is cased in IP 66/67-rated non-corrosive, marine grade, stainless-steel casing built to withstand all types of weather, including salt air and humidity, along with high-pressure water blasts from road and tunnel cleaning operations.
The 4K camera features an optical zoom of 6 to 22 mm with a detection range of up to 300 m (984 ft), providing greater coverage per camera compared to predecessor FLIR intelligent traffic cameras.
The camera has an innovative three-axis rotational design that allows installation flexibility for mounting on different roadway infrastructures including the sloped walls of tunnels and within tight spaces.
The three-axis camera swivel, pans, tilts and rolls sideways, removing the need for time consuming custom adapter plates.
Detection features of the TrafiBot Dual AI
The TrafiBot Dual AI offers a fast thermal core, 14-bit early fire detection for road tunnels, robust artificial intelligence (AI) for the highest detection performance and traffic data collection on interurban roadways.
The solution allows for detection without sacrificing imaging resolution or data loss due to bandwidth restrictions.
TrafiBot Dual AI utilises three FLIR proprietary AI models that have been developed and trained from millions of FLIR-captured images collected across the world.
One AI model identifies and classifies fallen objects whilst the other two classify vehicles through the thermal and visual stream.
This includes e-scooters and vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists.
Incident and fire detection
Combined with the FLIR-patented 3D world tracker, The TrafiBot features a higher capacity when detecting incidents within a scene.
As vehicles enters the view span of the camera, it is able to anticipate vehicle speed and direction, even if tracked objects become covered or obscured by other vehicles, objects or road infrastructure.
TrafiBot Dual AI can also detect sudden lane changes and wrong-way drivers, providing critical data to traffic managers to better manage safety incidents, reducing false alarms.
The camera has early fire detection, that analyses the 14-bit thermal information directly on the camera and gives the camera algorithm 64-times more information.
This allows fire detection, speed and reliability while reducing the potential for false alarms making it the new standard for early fire detection in traffic road tunnels.
“Traffic management teams require more immediate, accurate traffic data”
Stefaan Pinck, Vice President, Business Development, FLIR commented: “Intelligent traffic management systems have made great strides during the past decade and today traffic management teams require more immediate, accurate traffic data to alert first responders, save lives and get vehicles moving again.
He affirmed: “TrafiBot Dual AI provides that capability through a combination of proprietary AI models 3D world tracker and its early fire detection capabilities.”
Gil Marques, President, Tacel said: “FLIR has gone in the right direction by integrating its own traffic intelligence experience dating back more than 30 years within its AI algorithm, an experience that is unmatched by anyone else in the industry,”
He added: “Competitors must rely on off-the-shelf datasets and brand-new datasets to build their respective AI algorithms, which is not as powerful as the approach FLIR is using.”
