Dubai is reportedly set to spend over $8b to enhance its rainwater drainage system following the major downpours it witnessed in early 2024.
The rain – which caused widespread flooding across the UAE city – is said to have been the heaviest downpour recorded across the country in 75 years.
Drainage project to increase “readiness”
According to an article published by Reuters, project “Tasreef” will be completed by 2033 and will cover all areas of the Emirate.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, has said this will increase “readiness to face future climate-related challenges” whilst simultaneously meeting “needs for the next hundred years.”
The heavy April downpours affected the Gulf’s tourism and business hub, damaging roads, shops and homes whilst also forcing Dubai International Airport to reduce its capacity.
The project is said to be a continuation of drainage projects previously launched in 2019.
