The future of body cameras in enterprise industries

George Gigney-Adamou, Content Manager, Motorola Solutions explores the innovations fuelling the increasing importance of body cameras in sectors such as retail, education and hospitality.

Body cameras have been a staple of public safety operations for decades. The core value of these devices lies in their ability to provide objective, first-person video evidence that fosters accountability and trust. This indisputable visual record plays a vital role in both de-escalation and deterrence.

The visible presence of a body camera can significantly deter aggressive behavior and defuse tense situations, encouraging more compliant interactions. And they are becoming increasingly adopted by enterprise industries aiming to improve the safety of staff and customers, optimise efficiency and enhance incident management.

The future of body camera technology is being shaped by its expansion beyond law enforcement and other emergency services. Industries such as retail, education, hospitality and healthcare are increasingly embracing the security and accountability benefits this safety tool provides.

Here, we will explore the innovations and use cases driving this increase in adoption and how they are aiding organisations across these sectors.

Empowering public-facing workers

Body cameras are no longer just limited to security teams within enterprise sectors; employees in public-facing roles are also being equipped with them to help prevent incidents from escalating.

According to Motorola Solutions’ annual survey of more than 1,000 US retail associates and managers, for example, 51% report that petty theft is on the rise, and 45% are concerned for shopper safety.

When people know they are on camera, they are far less likely to act aggressively or even violently, reducing the chances of disputes developing into more serious security issues. But the latest generation of body camera technology takes this a step further.

Motorola Solutions’ V200 body camera, for instance, is designed with a dedicated recording and escalation button to activate GoLive Audio, a safety feature that ensures employees have immediate access to a supervisor or security team at a moment’s notice while recording every detail from start to finish.

An intuitive top display allows for a quick glance at the battery status or connection to Wi-Fi and the security monitoring centre, while two dedicated buttons allow employees to quickly record and/or alert a supervisor or security team.

These advancements in body camera technology are helping keep staff safer and empowering them to manage incidents with greater confidence and control.

Real-time connectivity

Enhanced connectivity and real-time communication are now vital in enterprise industries, with the ability to livestream video and audio and integrate with security operation centres, providing real-time awareness and facilitating rapid response to incidents.

The best body cameras can now go beyond just providing video evidence of incidents; livestreaming capabilities allow workers to provide a live, first-hand account of what is happening, which can be accessed by senior staff and security personnel.

An appropriate response, such as dispatching a member of security staff, guiding an employee or talking directly to an aggressor can be done while the situation is ongoing.

The V200 and the Motorola Solutions VB400 both come with livestreaming capabilities over Wi-Fi, enhancing situational awareness for improved and safer outcomes.

The VB400 can pair with MOTOTRBO R7 and Ion radios for auto activation on emergency button press or “person down” alerts. Peer-assisted recording allows nearby cameras to automatically activate, providing additional viewpoints of an incident.

With features like these, body cameras can become an essential part of enterprise security operations, improving connectivity between teams and enhancing their capacity to respond to incidents.

Advanced management software

It’s not enough for enterprise organisations to just have innovative body cameras; they need the appropriate software to manage them effectively. As body cameras become more widely used, the need for management systems that facilitate tailored and effective usage of them rises.

VideoManager EX, an intuitive, browser-based software tool, simplifies the administration of V200 and VB400 body cameras and their footage.

Comprehensive video management tools are provided for searching, playing, storing and securely sharing videos, along with efficient redaction capabilities to protect privacy and comply with regulations.

Workflow optimisation is ensured with granular, permission-based access, allowing users to only access relevant information and audit logs providing a complete evidence trail.

VideoManager can be personalised for specific teams so that it functions exactly how they need it to and does not require extensive training or maintenance, making it accessible to more workers.

Advanced management software like VideoManager ensures body camera footage – whether it’s livestreamed or recorded and saved – is readily available and can be used however it is needed for improved security outcomes.

Motorola Solutions body camera footage can also be seamlessly integrated with various VMS for centralised monitoring and management.

Furthermore, this footage can be connected to third-party applications, such as Auror for retail, to enhance incident reporting, evidence collection and overall loss prevention strategies.

Clear and reliable video recording

Gone are the days of grainy video footage that makes it hard to recognise what is actually happening on-screen; body cameras, despite their small size, are becoming capable of recording high-quality video for extended periods.

This is vital for enterprise organisations and their staff, who need to know the footage they’re capturing is a clear and reliable account of the events that took place.

Both the V200 and the VB400 can record at 720p, and the VB400 can capture video in 1080p.

The two cameras have extended battery runtimes of nine hours and 12 hours, respectively, so they never die when they’re needed. V200 can also be used in standby mode, when auto pre-record is not needed, providing up to five months of battery life on a single charge.

Context is vital for security footage.

Capturing unexpected interactions and situations in their entirety can make a huge difference to security operations, particularly when it comes to using footage as evidence.

The V200 and the VB400 come with pre-record, which captures video and audio from the moments before the button is pressed on the camera to begin recording.

Real-world usage

Tasked with overseeing 10,000 students across 13 campuses, Hutto Independent School District (ISD) relies on the VB400 body camera every day to capture evidence and foster trust in the school community.

The district’s large student population and numerous campuses required a scalable body camera solution to ensure staff and student protection.

The VB400 and its backend software were a great fit for Hutto ISD. Because the solution was straightforward to deploy and completely customisable, officers could start using the technology immediately with minimal training.

The body cameras help to deescalate conflicts between students, capture evidence of incidents and foster a culture of transparency and accountability.

Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea also deployed VB400 cameras for security staff across its campus, utilising the cameras’ superior encryption to secure video data from unauthorised viewing and security interferences.

The rugged yet lightweight design of the cameras has proven invaluable to their security teams, with the VB400 tested to military standards and able to withstand rain, snow and dust.

Leading body cameras for enhanced security

The role of body cameras is rapidly evolving from a public safety staple to an essential security tool across diverse enterprise industries, including retail, education and hospitality.

This shift is driven by the clear benefits of enhancing staff safety, improving incident management and increasing organisational efficiency.

Innovations such as real-time connectivity, advanced management software like VideoManager EX and crystal-clear video recording capabilities are transforming what these devices can achieve.

Motorola Solutions, with products like the V200 and VB400 body cameras, is providing the sophisticated, connected and reliable solutions necessary for workers to feel empowered and for organisations to maintain a robust and accountable security posture.
