Argentina’s telecoms regulator is preparing a new rule which would make it mandatory for operators to register customer biometrics when they swap to new SIM cards.

The implementation of this procedure – which was confirmed by Gustavo Lopez, Vice President, Ente Nacional De Comunicaciones (Enacom) – would improve security for subscribers whilst also hindering SIM hijacking.

As reported by local newspaper Clarin, Vice President Lopez made the announcement after prompts by a Federal Judge who requested that the regulatory authority should implement more security measures to prevent phone hacking.

Enacom will publish its full decision by the end of February 2023.
