Biometric infrastructure is powering digital identity growth

Biometric infrastructure is quietly underpinning digital identity expansion, says Digvijay Singh Kanwar, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales IUEA, NEXT Biometrics.

The global conversation around digital transformation often focuses on applications, platforms and consumer-facing experiences.

But behind many digital economies sits a more fundamental layer: trusted identity verification.

The infrastructure of digital identity

Across banking, payments and government services, biometric authentication technologies are increasingly being used to help verify individuals securely and reliably at scale.

Rather than operating through consumer-facing applications directly, biometric infrastructure providers typically sit deeper within the technology stack, supplying fingerprint sensors and authentication technologies that support identity verification systems used by banks, payment providers and device manufacturers.

This is becoming particularly relevant in emerging digital economies such as India and Nigeria, where financial systems, digital payments infrastructure and digital identity frameworks are evolving rapidly – with India alone recently listed as the fifth most digitalised economy globally.

India has created one of the world’s most advanced digital identity ecosystems through Aadhaar, reshaping how identity verification operates across banking, payments and public services. In 2011, the World Bank reported that only 35% of Indian adults had a bank account.

Today, Aadhaar-linked authentication is integrated into everyday financial activity for more than 1.4 billion enrolled residents, enabling services such as bank account opening, welfare payment distribution and access to financial services in rural communities.

For biometric infrastructure providers, India represents not simply a large commercial market, but a national-scale digital infrastructure environment with exceptionally high operational, interoperability and security requirements.

A major deployment area has been the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS), which allows individuals to carry out banking transactions using fingerprint authentication linked to their Aadhaar identity.

The significance of this model is particularly apparent in rural underserved areas, where many consumers may not possess cards, PINs or smartphones but can still access banking infrastructure securely through biometric verification.

This has important implications for financial inclusion.

Biometric authentication allows banking services to extend beyond urban traditional branch infrastructure through agent banking networks, mobile banking devices and local service points, effectively enabling fingerprints to operate as secure credentials for accessing the financial system.

For governments and financial institutions, biometric authentication also helps strengthen confidence that services and payments are reaching the correct individuals. Robust authentication frameworks can help reduce identity-related fraud across large-scale payment systems operating at a national scale.

The operational requirements are substantial. Aadhaar authentication has already supported over 150 billion transactions, requiring biometric systems that can operate consistently across varied environmental conditions, infrastructure environments and user populations.

India has simultaneously emerged as a leader in raising biometric security standards, particularly through evolving certification requirements, stronger device security mandates and increase on anti-spoofing protections.

These developments are driving demand for more secure and resilient biometric authentication technologies capable of supporting high volume financial systems reliably.

Nigeria represents a different but similarly important example of this broader trend.

As digital payment adoption surges across Nigeria – with the country making over $250m from digital payments in 2025 alone – secure identity verification has become increasingly important for financial institutions seeking to expand financial access while reducing fraud risks.

Biometric authentication technologies are increasingly being integrated into smart POS devices, agent banking infrastructure and payment authentication systems linked to Nigeria’s Bank Verification Number, or BVN, framework.

These systems support secure transaction verification and are particularly valuable in regions where traditional banking infrastructure remains limited.

A key component of Nigeria’s payments infrastructure is the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), which connects financial institutions across the country to facilitate electronic payments, inter-bank transfers and identity verification services.

Certification requirements linked to NIBSS have also helped drive demand for secure biometric payment devices capable of supporting trusted digital transactions at scale.

Biometric identity infrastructure: a critical layer

Together, India and Nigeria illustrate how biometric identity infrastructure is becoming an important layer within the expansion of digital economies.

While much public attention remains focused on consumer applications and digital platforms, the underlying authentication technologies enabling trusted access to financial systems are becoming just as strategically important.
